{"id":10422,"date":"2024-09-10T09:40:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-10T09:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.usviodr.com\/?p=10422"},"modified":"2026-04-12T12:27:52","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T12:27:52","slug":"historic-preservation-committee-approves-architectural-plans-for-new-decastro-clinic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.usviodr.com\/es\/historic-preservation-committee-approves-architectural-plans-for-new-decastro-clinic\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic Preservation Committee Approves  Architectural Plans for New DeCastro Clinic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">September 10, 2024<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-3099\" src=\"https:\/\/www.usviodr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/DOH-LOGO.2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"332\" height=\"332\" \/><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center\">Historic Preservation Committee Approves<br \/>\nArchitectural Plans for New DeCastro Clinic<\/h1>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Health Commissioner Expresses Gratitude<\/em><\/h2>\n<p><strong>U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS<\/strong> \u2013 VI Health Commissioner Justa Encarnacion expressed gratitude to the State Historic Preservation Committee for approving the architectural design of the new Morris F. deCastro Clinic on St. John.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Commissioner Encarnacion, Assistant Commissioner Reuben Molloy, and the VI Health Department\u2019s Project Management Office team, along with Springline Architects principals Jerry Traino and Gilbert Laban, presented the clinic\u2019s architectural plans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking with Springline Architects, we put our hearts into the design ensuring that the new facility enhanced Cruz Bay\u2019s landscape, preserved its historical significance, and honored the legacy of Morris F. deCastro, whose role included establishing health centers across the territory,\u201d Commissioner Encarnacion said. \u201cWe also wanted to create a facility that meets the healthcare needs of St. John residents and instills pride in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The design of the new clinic expands the facility upwards from one to three floors, increasing from 5,500 to 11,325 square feet, while staying within the original footprint. The ground level features 14 parking spaces, and the second floor includes the lobby and clinical spaces. The third floor is dedicated to administrative and support staff. The expansion allows for more permanent healthcare services, improved emergency preparedness, sustainable design and improved accessibility.<\/p>\n<p>Originally built in 1953, the clinic was heavily damaged by hurricanes Irma and Maria. In 2023, following a lengthy application process, FEMA awarded the USVI $17.5 million for the clinic\u2019s replacement. With design approval, the VI Health Department will now work with Springline Architects on interior design development.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives of the VI Department of Public Works (DPW) also attended Tuesday\u2019s committee meeting.
