CROIX \u2013 The Department of Public Works is pleased to share with the community that the Kingshill Cemetery parking lot is currently undergoing much needed repairs.<\/p>\n<p>DPW contractor, Virgin Islands Paving Inc., began working on the reconstruction late last month. The scope of work for this project includes removal of the existing asphalt pavement, installation of new asphalt pavement, placement of soil erosion control measures, striping and temporary traffic controls. This $624,564.50 project\u2014funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency\u2014is expected to be completed by the end of April 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The cemetery parking lot suffered extensive damages following Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. The damages were compiled when the site was used as a staging area to house large trucks and equipment for debris handling and separating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hurricanes really did a number on our cemeteries and we\u2019re hoping to finish our long list of tasks regarding each of those damages,\u201d said Commissioner Derek Gabriel.<\/p>\n<p>Repairs to the roadways leading to the cemetery are among those the department is also looking forward to. \u201cWe have already begun repairs to the Queen Mary Highway,\u201d said Commissioner Gabriel. \u201cCurrently, contractors are paving from St. Croix Central High School down to the University of the Virgin Islands. We are trying to bring as much relief to the community as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DPW appreciates the community&#8217;s patience as they work to improve road conditions throughout the territory.
