Course Description:
Participants in this course will learn why bicycle travel accommodations should be included in the transportation
network, gain an understanding of key safety principles for bicyclists, and learn about design treatments, safety
countermeasures, and the latest national guidance and best practices.
Bicyclists are vulnerable users and bikeway networks should serve the range of bicyclist skill levels. Many more people would likely choose to ride a bike if there were bikeways where they felt safe. We will discuss design features for a safer and more comfortable bike riding experience on shoulders, shared lanes, bike lanes, and separated bike lanes. We will also discuss safety countermeasures for intersections and other conflict points. Participants will be provided with information on various tools that are available to analyze and evaluate safety.
The course will include an optional bicycle tour to view some nearby bicycle facilities and experience the roadway from the point-of-view of the bicyclist. The tour will be suitable for riders with less experience, and a bike can be provided for those needing one. If participating in the bicycle tour, please bring a helmet, dress appropriately, and bring water. Some helmets will be available. The bike tour will be held in Frederiksted, St Croix on Tuesday July 12 at 9:00 am. The exact meeting location will be sent to all registered participants. On St. Thomas, the tour will begin at DPW in Subbase at 4:00 pm. Participants in St. Thomas are encouraged to participate in the open information session being held at the DPW office from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Participants will be responsible for lunch. The St. Croix tour will include a stop for lunch.
