Concordia Convenience Center Groundbreaking ceremony

VIWMA Marks Major Milestone with Groundbreaking of Concordia Convenience Center

St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands — The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) officially broke ground on the Concordia Convenience Center, marking a significant step forward in modernizing vital waste management infrastructure on St. Croix.

The ceremony, held today, February 12, 2026, at Estate Concordia, commemorated the start of construction on a long-anticipated project that will enhance solid waste services, boost operational efficiency, and promote environmental stewardship within the community.

Once completed, the Concordia Convenience Center will replace the former open-bin disposal site with a modern, organized, and environmentally responsible facility designed to better serve residents of the surrounding communities. The transformation represents a visible upgrade in how residential waste is managed.

“Today’s groundbreaking at Estate Concordia continues our progress to strengthen infrastructure and improve quality of life for Virgin Islands residents. This convenience center replaces an open-bin site with a cleaner, safer, modern facility that respects nearby communities and protects public health and the environment. We are staying focused on the issues that matter most to our people, and we are delivering practical improvements you can see and use,” said Governor Albert Bryan Jr.

Our Concordia project is part of VIWMA’s broader modernization strategy. Additional convenience centers are expected to be constructed in the near future as the Authority continues upgrading facilities throughout the territory.

“Office of Disaster Recovery Director Adrienne L. Williams-Octalien emphasized the significance of today’s milestone and noted the importance of using federal funds to improve the quality of life for the people of the Virgin Islands. She stated, “Once completed, this project will improve environmental health and public safety. I would like to thank the Virgin Islands Housing Finance Authority for its partnership as the grant recipient and the ODR team for their collaboration with all stakeholders to keep the project and funding on track.”

“The Concordia Convenience Center signifies a major advancement in modernizing and enhancing waste management infrastructure on St. Croix,” said VIWMA Executive Director Hannibal “Mike” Ware. “This project underscores our ongoing dedication to improving service delivery, safeguarding public health, and encouraging responsible environmental practices across the U.S. Virgin Islands.”

The new center will provide residents with a cleaner, safer, and more efficient location for residential waste disposal — reinforcing VIWMA’s mission to deliver sustainable and reliable waste management services territory-wide.

VIWMA thanks the community for its continued patience and support as we work diligently to enhance our services and address any ongoing challenges. Your understanding plays a vital role in our efforts to create a better, more sustainable environment for everyone.
